1. Decide what kind of deck you're after
"Turntable" on eBay covers everything from suitcase players to transcription decks that need a custom plinth. Narrow it down first. If you'll plug into powered speakers, you want a deck with a built-in preamp. If you have a stereo amp, a hi-fi belt-drive deck makes sense. If you love old gear, go vintage. 2. Read the listing like a pro
Start with the condition label
eBay's condition labels mean specific things. The one to watch is "For parts or not working," which eBay defines as an item that "does not function as intended and is not fully operational," including items that need service or repair or are missing essential components. That can be a fine buy for a tinkerer. Just don't pay working-deck money for it.
Then study the photos
Good listings show the actual deck, not a stock image. Look for:
- The tonearm from the side. Bends, a missing counterweight or a damaged headshell show up here.
- The stylus, close up. Is there one at all? Does it look straight?
- The platter and mat, and the belt or drive if the platter is off.
- The dust cover and hinges. Cracks and missing hinges are common.
- The back panel and cables. Frayed or missing leads add work.
Decode the description

3. Ask the seller before you buy
Most sellers are happy to answer a clear, polite question, and their answer, or silence, tells you a lot. The best single request is a short video of the deck playing a record with the sound on. It shows speed, tracking, both channels and general condition in about thirty seconds.
Other things worth asking:
- How old is the stylus, and is the cartridge included?
- Is everything included: dust cover, counterweight, headshell, belt, power supply?
- How will it be packed? Will the platter come off and the tonearm be secured?
- Do you still have the original box?

4. Check the seller, not just the deck
Read the seller's recent feedback, especially any that mentions packing or items not as described. Check the return policy, but know that "no returns" isn't the end of the story: the eBay Money Back Guarantee still applies when an item doesn't match its listing. Turntables are heavy, so look at the shipping cost and where the item ships from before you get attached. Local pickup, if offered, avoids shipping risk entirely.
5. Pay through eBay. Always.

Search eBay6. When it arrives, test it straight away
You generally have 30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date to open a Money Back Guarantee request, so don't let the box sit in the hall.
- Photograph the box before you open it, especially any damage.
- Unpack slowly and keep all the packing material until you're happy.
