How to pack a turntable for shipping, and what to ask an eBay seller

A turntable can survive decades on a shelf and not survive a week in a delivery van. Here's how one should be packed, whether you're sending one or asking a seller to.

Why turntables break in transit

A turntable is a heavy spinning mass (the platter) sitting on a precise bearing, next to a delicate arm holding an even more delicate stylus. Left assembled in a box, the platter can hammer the bearing and chassis when the box is dropped, the arm can swing and bend, and the stylus can snap off. Almost all the packing advice comes down to one idea: take off anything heavy or fragile, and stop everything else from moving.

How a turntable should be packed

Manufacturer and dealer guides agree on the basics. Pro-Ject's manual, for example, says to pack the lid, counterweight, anti-skating weight and belt separately, and to fit the cartridge protection cap and the tonearm's transport lock. A dealer's guide to packing a Linn LP12 walks through removing the mat, outer platter, belt and inner platter, securing the arm, and taking the counterweight off.

  1. Protect the stylus. Fit the stylus guard. If the cartridge can come off easily, the seller may remove it and pack it on its own.
  2. Remove the counterweight and wrap it separately. It's heavy and will swing the arm if left on.
  3. Secure the tonearm in its rest with a twist tie, pipe cleaner or the deck's own arm clip or transport lock.
  4. Take off the mat, platter and belt. Wrap the platter on its own and keep the belt in a small bag, away from anything oily or sharp.
  5. Lock the subchassis on suspended decks. Some, like the Thorens TD 160, have transport lock screws for this. Others need the suspension packed so it can't bounce.
  6. Remove the dust cover and pack it separately, protecting the hinges, which snap easily.
  7. Box it snugly. The original box and inserts are best. Otherwise, use a sturdy box with firm padding on all sides, so nothing can shift. Double-boxing adds a margin of safety.

What to ask your eBay seller

You can't pack it yourself, but you can make your expectations clear before you buy. A polite, specific message works best. Feel free to copy this one:

Hi! Before I buy, could you confirm how you'll pack the turntable? I'd be grateful if the platter, mat and belt could be removed and packed separately, the counterweight removed, the tonearm secured and the stylus guard fitted. Do you still have the original box? Thanks!

  1. Photograph the outside of the box, then each layer as you unpack.
  2. Keep all the packaging until the issue is resolved.
