- Have the deck shipped to you, not the recipient.
- eBay's standard window is generally 30 calendar days from the estimated or actual delivery; a no-returns not-working or parts item gets 3 days.
- Avoid "for parts or not working" for anything meant as a ready-to-use gift.
- Check contents, tonearm, stylus, drive and sound, and photograph any problem straight away.
- Defer mains-voltage questions to the manual and a qualified technician.
Why a used deck needs a pre-gift test
A new gift can be wrapped straight from the box. A used turntable cannot, because the only person who can still do something about a fault is the buyer, and only for a limited time. If the first test happens on Christmas morning, you may be past every return window and the recipient is holding a problem instead of a present.
So the plan is simple: buy early, have the deck shipped to you, test it properly, then wrap it. If you are still choosing a deck, start with our gift guide by recipient, and read the used turntable buying guide for how to read a listing.
Work backwards from the return window
The eBay Money Back Guarantee generally covers an item that arrives broken, damaged or faulty, or that does not match the listing. A return request is generally due within 30 calendar days of the estimated or actual delivery date, or within the seller's stated returns window, whichever is longer. Two details matter for gifts:
- If the seller offers no returns and the deck was sold as not working or for parts only, the request is due no later than 3 calendar days after delivery.
- Payment made partly or wholly outside eBay is not covered.
Count the days from the delivery date, not from the day you plan to give the gift. A deck delivered in early November and tested at the end of December may be outside the standard window. The Black Friday turntable guide shows how those dates line up with the 2026 sales.
Pick a listing that suits a gift
For a gift, the condition label matters more than usual. eBay defines Used as previously used, possibly with cosmetic wear, but fully operational. For parts or not working means the item does not function as intended and is not fully operational. Avoid the second category for a gift unless the recipient is a tinkerer who asked for a project.
Prefer a listing that:
- shows photos of the actual deck, not a stock image;
- includes a video of it playing, ideally with sound;
- states what is included (dust cover, counterweight, headshell, belt);
- offers returns, or comes from a seller with a clear record of well-packed turntables.
Send the seller questions before you buy. The seller question builder writes the message for you.
Unbox and check it as soon as it arrives
Take photographs of the box before opening it, then keep the packing material. If the package arrived damaged, eBay's guidance is to accept the delivery and report that the item does not match the listing, rather than refusing it. Then walk through this checklist:
| Check | What you are looking for |
|---|---|
| Everything in the listing is present | Dust cover, counterweight, headshell, cartridge, platter, mat, belt if used, power supply |
| Tonearm | Moves freely, no visible bend, lifts and lowers cleanly |
| Stylus | Present, straight, and not obviously worn. Assume a used stylus is near the end of its life unless the seller says otherwise |
| Platter and drive | Turns smoothly. On a belt-drive deck, the belt is present and not cracked or sticky |
| Cables and plug | No frayed or cracked insulation |
| Sound | Both speakers, no loud hum, steady speed on a record you do not treasure |
Mains-powered equipment needs care. If the power cord looks damaged, or an older deck has a voltage selector or an unfamiliar plug, stop and read the maker's manual. Do not open the case or attempt electrical repairs yourself. A qualified technician should check anything beyond the outside of the deck.
Fix what a gift cannot wait for
Some common problems are small, and fixing them before the gift is easy:
- Old stylus. Replace it with one that matches the exact cartridge model. Our stylus guide explains how to identify it safely.
- Stretched or cracked belt. See the belt drive guide for why belts wear.
- Dirty platter or dust cover. Wipe gently, following the maker's advice for the finish.

Search eBayDo not guess at the model. If you cannot identify the cartridge, ask the seller or read the markings on the deck before you buy anything.
Wrapping it up
Pack the deck back into its protective packaging for the surprise, and put a short note in the box: the model name, a link to the manual, a simple hookup sketch, and the fact that it needs speakers or a preamp if the recipient does not have them yet. A small extra such as a record cleaning brush rounds it out.
If the deck arrives too late to test properly, do not wrap an unknown. Give a note that it is on its way instead, and test it first. A late present is a better gift than an untested one, and you will still be inside the return window if something turns up.

eBay policy points were read on eBay's own help pages in October 2026. Individual sellers set their own return terms, so read the listing.
- eBay: Money Back Guarantee policy (30-day window, 3-day exception, payment outside eBay not covered)
- eBay: Buyer protection and damaged items (accept a damaged delivery and report it as not matching the listing)
- eBay: Item conditions by category (Used and For parts or not working)
Electrical safety, voltage and plug questions are not covered here. Use the deck's manual and a qualified technician.
